Derrick Disney and Twinzers
Welcome to the Derrick Disney Twinzer experience! Here you will find two very different examples of twinzer setups, the RDM and DST, and explanations for the how and why and when. Derrick has been working with twinzers for quite some time, strategically aligning different fin setups with bottom contours and performance goals. Enjoy!
To begin, let's check in with Derrick himself as he walks through both of the fin sets. RDM can kick us off...
And now the DST...
Fantastic, we hope that was both enjoyable and informative! Holy smokes is Derrick (and friends) an exceptional surfer. The proof is in the pudding? Let's dive a little further into each of these designs.
Derrick Disney x RDM Twinzer
The original idea was to accomplish keel fin surface area separated into a twinzer to break the long 8” base. When you match the canard and rear up to a keel, you see the similarity. The rear is obviously higher aspect, taller, and wispier, but the 3” base canard brings the keel back into play. If you can combine the plug angle and the canard angle to reach 13° then the goal of combining the bonzer, keel, high aspect twin feelings all in a twinzer is accomplished.
The RDM stands for “Ryan Derrick Modified”, the rear fin riffs off a twin Derrick and Ryan Burch worked on together. It has curves akin to the Burch Twin. The RDM Twinzer sets works best in fish style boards, turning a keel fish into a turbo twinzer, adding agility, a little extra speed, and smoother transitions.
The rear fin has 70/30 foil, so it’s not flat inside. Sometimes 70/30 loses speed because it adds grab, in this case we thinned out the fin to not sacrifice speed and still have the soft leading edge of a double foil that smoothes out transitions.
Fishy Twinzer Split Keel concept
70/30 foil but thinned out
3” base canard, set at 13°
Agile, fast, smooth
Bonzer + Keel + High Aspect Twin = RDM Twinzer
In relation to a keel fish, the TWINZR FISH maintains a similar stability but is geared a little higher. The leading canard, with the trailing high aspect rear side fins, break up the length of a keel allowing for a narrower tail block. It translates to maneuverability in a tight spaces while still providing plenty of drive. New places on the wave are unlocked. The bottom contour is rolled in the top end and transitions to a hourglass shaped single concave under the front foot and through the fins. Slow in fast out. Go to size is 5’4”-19 7/8”-2 7/16”. Best range is from 5’0” to 5’9”.
The ZORN TWINZR FISH is a modified version of the TWINZR FISH. It has quite a lot of tail rocker and a narower outline. The bottom is a single concave. Made for steeper waves than the original twinzer fish. You can really match the curve of a tight transition with the Zorn. Go to size 5’4 x 19 3/8 x 2 3/8. Good in the 5’2” to 5’11” range.v
Derrick Disney x DST Twinzer
The DST are a smaller set of fins compared to other twinzers out there. The rear fins are about the size of a thruster fin, and set farther back on the tail, similar to the placement of a single fin. The fin set up allows for spring and projection yet references a single fin approach.
The DST setup is great for an egg, aka mid length, aka “Midzr”, style board, mimicing the feels of a single fin egg, but juiced up as a twinzer. Derrick’s Midzr Egg model is the “pocket knife for the average day.”
Derrick sets the canard fins farther forward from the rear fin with a 3/4” gap to had a little bit of grip. But by placing the fin setup as a whole farther back on the tail, there is less drag. The canards farther forward create an early point of contact, which help turning the board while standing more forward.
Egg Midzr Twinzer
Smaller set of fins
Push canards forward
Get canards to 13°
More grip, less drag
Easier forward stance turning
The MIDZR EGG is a pocket knife for the average day. Lots of volume for stability and a wide threshold of wave size. The bottom contour is fairly neutral and simple throughout with a slight vee in the tail. Simple egg outline juiced up with the twinzer set up. The fin set up allows for spring and projection yet references a single fin approach. Personal go to for the void in the quiver is 7’0”-21 1/2”- 2 3/4”. Ranging from 6’6” - 7’7”.
Long fish in nature, the TWINZR ROE FISH provides a bigger platform. It is foiled out to balance the surface area. The bottom has reverse vee in the nose to slight single concave to slight vee out the tail. An extension to the TWINZR FISH size limitations for more glide and possibly a bigger rider. More foiled and fishlike than the MIDZR, it lands in between the TWINZR FISH and the MIDZR taking aspects from both designs. Personal favorite size is 6’5”- 21 1/8”- 2 5/8”. This design can be applied from 5’11”- 7’7”.
